About Alexandra Murphy
Alexandra Hayes Murphy, embarked on an architectural journey that led her from the east coast to Tucson and beyond. Inspired by a transformative voyage from Turkey to India in 1976, she shifted her focus from art to architecture while studying at the University of Arizona. After graduating, Sandra gained experience by apprenticing on east coast with accomplished architects, specializing in historic restoration. One notable project during this time was the restoration of the Web-Vanderbilt summer home in Shelburne, Vermont, while working with architect Martin Tierney.
This experience further honed her skills and deepened her passion for historic preservation architectural design. Over a span of 30 years, Alexandra engaged in inspiring projects around the world including Hawaii, Malaysia, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Dubai, Pakistan, and India. These international endeavors allowed her to study historic architectural styles and cultural influences, shaping a personalized design vocabulary. In 1990, Alexandra established her office in Tucson, where she dedicated 20 years to working with exceptional clients.
Her custom homes showcased her commitment to quality craftsmanship and attention to detail, 98% of them constructed of masonry. A notable highlight of her Tucson career was her role as the architect of record for the Meigs residence in Colonial Solanas, which gained recognition through its feature in the PBS series "This Old House." This acknowledgment further solidified her reputation as a skilled architect. In 2010, Alexandra made the decision to slow down her business activities to support her daughter in Los Angeles.
However, in 2019, she returned to Tucson embarking on a long-held dream of transforming her family's small masonry building in the West University area, into the esteemed property known today as "Tucson Manor West." This endeavor exemplifies her dedication and meticulous approach to every project she has undertaken.
